I’ve been doing an awful lot of guest blog posts lately so I decided to pull a few of my author friends into this one and make it a ‘round-table’ post. I asked my friends what lessons they’ve learned along the way as a self-published author. Here’s my answer along with a few from my friends:
Lori Ryan: I’ve learned the importance of being sure your cover matches your heat level. My books are pretty steamy, but the cover I designed gives the impression of the book being a sweetheart romance. I am currently having the covers redesigned to reflect the heat level of the story. I can’t wait to see what my designer comes up with! www.Loriryanromance.com
Kaylea Cross: To maintain momentum, an author needs to keep releasing new books using a consistent timeframe between each release. Go too long between books, and you risk losing traction with the readership you’re building. http://kayleacross.com
Debra Burroughs: I’ve learned that it is hard to write a great book, but once you’ve finished and produced your fabulous novel, now the really hard work begins – marketing and selling your work. You might have written the best book the world has ever read, but if no one knows about it, how will they ever buy it? http://www.debraburroughsbooks.com
Sharon Hamilton gave me a list of three great tips:
1. Keep writing every day. Start something new as soon as you finish one thing. Try to have something up every 3-4 months.
2. Write in series. Now I would say to put them up every 30 days when you have 3 written and edited/formatted properly. Give yourself a big boost right at the get-go.
3. Make sure your covers are killer. Don’t try to do it yourself. You can get unique later, but at first make sure you are delivering a picture that will make them want to buy you. Later they’ll follow you no matter what the picture looks like. Make sure your content is professionally edited, too. http://sharonhamiltonauthor.com/
So, take all the tips you can from authors who have paved the way for you and get on out there and write. Thanks for coming by the blog today. Oh, and if you’re an author who has a lesson or tip to teach, leave a comment!
